During Gary's playing career, he was one of the best known and widely admired soccer players in the world, winning both the PFA Players' Player of the year and Football Writers' Association Footballer of the year. Gary helped take the England team to the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup and won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup. He retired from international football with 80 caps and 48 goals to his name; he decided to pursue a career in media. Gary's media career began on Radio 5 as a football pundit and he was then hired by the BBC to take over Des Lynam as the BBC's main football presenter.
